Renowned for its wildlife, the Grampians is a sanctuary for kangaroos, koalas, emus, an abundance of Australian bird life and many other native animals. Dunkeld has been an inspiration for many artists including Eugene von Guerard, Nicholas Chevalier and Louis Buvelot. Dunkeld was first settled by Scottish pastoralists in the late 1830s and become reknown for superfine wool. Today, the Dunkeld has a population of under 500.
The Dunkeld Cup, held on the 2nd Saturday following Melbourne Cup, is a great opportunity to mix with the locals. Dunkeld is a 3 hour drive from Melbourne located along the Glenelg Highway.
