Accommodation in Port Campbell
Port Campbell is a sleepy windswept little fishing village nestled in a natural gorge at the mouth of Campbells Creek. Today, Port Campbell has a regular population of about 200 (more when tourist arrive), but the area boasts a long history of inhabitants. Shell middens from the original people of the region (Kirrae-Wurong people) show how this protected little village has always been a great place to live.
The seas along this section of the coast are famous for its shipwrecks. In from the 1840s to the 1920s there were over 80 shipwrecks between Cape Otway and Port Fairy. Port Campbell offered one of the only sheltered refuges between Apollo Bay and Warrnambool. Nearby, you'll see the 12 Apostles which have been carved from the coastal cliffs by the to form one of Australia's most famous tourist icons. London Bridge and Loch Ard Gorge are also popular Great Ocean Road attractions.
There is a still a fishing and crayfish industry and, in summertime, the beach is popular although the waters are rather cold.
